1860 December 20 South Carolina Secession Convention adopts the Ordinance of secession.
1860 December 26 Robert Anderson, Major, U. S. Artillery, moves U. S. troops from Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter. The move, Anderson said, was "necessary to prevent the effusion of blood."
1860 December 27 South Carolina troops seize Castle Pinckney and Fort Moultrie.
1860 December 30 South Carolina troops seize the United States Arsenal at Charleston.
1861 January 2 South Carolina troops seize Fort Johnson.
1861 January 5 The first efforts for Fort Sumter relief sails from New York Harbor.
1861 January 9 South Carolina troops fire on the Steamship Star of the West as it tries to relieve Fort Sumter.
